These works are abstractions – shaped and mutated by memory, fantasy and surprise. The force of visual curiosity and certain languages in art history which captivate and motivate me are always present too.
The work and themes are varied: for instance, some are stylistic composites where I combine optical and other graphic elements with painterly formats. Others are prompted by the materials I use and triggered by emotional stimuli which often result in spontaneity of form, colour and mark making. Like many painters I prefer a hands-on rapport with the materials I use as well as free-play in the studio.
I constantly draw upon my fascination with life and many compelling and challenging discourses, which excite my very sense of being. This seeps into my work and in the constant flux of creating, images and ideas multiply and new projects are inspired. I also appreciate the flexibility and diversity of contemporary art making, as this gives freedom to engage in a wide panorama of artistic expression.
My work is meant to be both fun and intense – irrepressible, ambiguous and carefully crafted too. It detaches from the everyday and contains my personal metaphors of complexity and transformation.
